Mura E Porte

A chronicle by Neri di Donato of 1371 states that, "the walls of Lucignano in the Val di Chiana were built by Sienese"...; and in fact the Lucignanesi did subject themselves to Sienese rule in 1370, but the restructuring of 1371 partly retraces an urban structure that dates back to the end of the 1200's and the early 1300's, as can be seen from documents found in the Cathedral of Arezzo that date back to 1330. The three main gates to the town are Porta S Giovanni (called Porta di Sotto or the Lower Gate, to the east), Porta S. Giusto (known as the upper gate, to the south-west), and the Porta Murata (north-west)recently re-opened.
